You have likely heard all the hype about stand-up desks and how they’re changing the workplace for the better. Study after study has shown that standing desks are a healthy alternative to traditional desks.
Research has shown that standing desks can reduce blood pressure, backaches, soreness in muscles, eye strain—all while improving productivity.
Here’s how to get the most out of your stand-up desk:
1. Alternate Between Sitting and Standing
The human body was not designed to sit for long hours, but it wasn’t made to stand for prolonged hours either. Doing anything in excess usually has negative consequences.
If you think you’re being healthy by standing and working 8 hours a day, you’re doing yourself a disservice. The muscles in your legs, tendons and the surrounding connective tissue can cause pain and varicose veins.
Instead of going all out and standing throughout the day, it’s best to switch between periods of sitting and standing. For every 2 hours, you spend sitting you should stand an hour; by doing so you engage various muscle groups.
2. Adjust the Height of Your Screen
When you raise a standing desk, level the height of the desks with your elbows as you stand so they are at a 90-degree position above the floor.
To prevent eye strain, keep your screen at least 20 inches from your face. The top of the screen should line up with your eyes so you don’t have to tilt your head down or up to work.
3. Consider Buying an Anti-Fatigue Mat
Anti-fatigue mats are used in jobs where workers are expected to stand for long periods; they can be used to provide extra comfort when working on a stand-up desk by improving blood flow.
Anti-fatigue mats can prevent varicose veins and pain from developing in your legs and back.
4. Use an Arm Support
Arm supports contain soft padding that can be attached to the desk. It helps reduce the pressure on the wrist as you use the mouse. Arm supports help prevent shoulder and neck problems.
With the above tips in mind, you should be able to use your stand up desk with no trouble at all.
